Metals are naturally found in the environment but are also emitted through anthropogenic activities, raising some concerns about the potential deleterious effects of these elements on wildlife. The potential effects of metals on bird coloration have been the focus of several recent studies since animal colored-signals often reflect the physiology of their bearers and are thus used by animals to assess the quality of another individual as a mate or competitor. These studies have shown that the melanin pigmentation seems to be positively associated and the carotenoid-based coloration negatively associated with metal exposure in wild birds. Although these studies have been very useful to show the associations between metal exposure and coloration, only few of them have actually quantified the levels of metal exposure at the individual level; always focusing on one or two of them. Here, we measured the concentrations of eight metals in great tits' feathers and then assessed how these levels of metals were associated with the carotenoid and melanin-based colorations. We found that the melanin pigmentation was positively associated with the copper concentration and negatively correlated with the chromium concentration in feathers. In addition, we have shown that the carotenoid-based coloration was negatively associated with the feather's mercury concentration. This study is the first one to identify some metals that might affect positively and negatively the deposition of melanin and carotenoid into the plumage of wild birds.Rafael Pardohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00482026140017463557noreply@blogger.com0Valladolid, Valladolid, España41.652251 -4.724532100000033141.2728905 -5.369979100000033 42.0316115 -4.0790851000000332tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8290348725032289766.post-28949758605743392072014-11-15T10:05:00.004+01:002014-11-15T10:06:24.807+01:00¡Viva San Alberto Magno!

Lead shot was forbidden in 2001 in Spanish wetlands on the Ramsar List of these areas of international importance. Ten years later, this prohibition -and the consequent use of steel shot by hunters- has started to bear fruit, according to a report in the journal ‘Environment International’.
“The most important part of our work is that it shows that, despite it’s still covering a partial area, the change of material from lead to steel shot has reduced waterfowl poisoning and the contamination of hunted meat,” says Rafael Mateo Soria of the Hunting Resources Research Institute (IREC) and co-author of the study.
Lead shot accumulating in wetlands, with over 100 per square metre in many areas, remains in the sediments for decades. Its main damage is to the health of waterfowl. When the shot is eaten it is retained in the gizzard and is worn down in the stomach, freeing lead that reaches the animal’s tissues.
In species such as the mallard, 30% caught at the start of the 1990s in the Ebro delta had ingested lead shot, a figure which has now dropped to 15%. The same trend has been seen in other species such as the northern shoveller, the Eurasian teal and the common pochard.
On the other hand, the case of the northern pintail caught continues to cause alarm since over 70% have shot in their gizzards, a rate similar to that seen three decades ago. The scientist notes that to discover the reason for the high percentage of poisoning in this species, they will start to fit birds with transmitters. "What we do know is that, because of its type of diet, this is a species with a high risk of ingesting shot. Nevertheless, in others that also have these risk factors, such as the common pochard, the rate has reduced after the change to steel shot," he added.
Another problem caused by lead shot is the contamination of meat. Even after lead shot was banned, the traces in animals caught with this metal exceed the limits set for meat for human consumption.
Researchers stress that the hunters’ compliance with this prohibition has been very high and that they have continued to hunt waterfowl in the same amount after the change from lead to steel. However, the law forbids lead shot in protected wetlands only. For this reason, lead shot is permitted in rice fields that ducks use as feeding areas, thus maintaining focuses of contamination for the birds and their meat.
This study has allowed the assessment of the effectiveness of the measures adopted by countries signing the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA), an agreement to protect waterfowl along their entire migration route between Africa and Eurasia and signed by some 30 European countries.
Abstract
The use of lead (Pb) ammunition in the form of shot pellets has been identified as a Pb exposure risk in wildlife and their human consumers. We explore the hypothesis that Pb shot ban enforcement reduces the risk of avian Pb poisoning as well as Pb exposure in game meat consumers. We assessed compliance with a partial ban on Pb shot commencing in 2003 by examination of 937 waterbirds harvested by hunters between 2007 and 2012 in the Ebro delta (Spain). Prevalence of Pb shot ingestion was determined, as were Pb concentrations in liver and muscle tissue to evaluate the potential for Pb exposure in game meat consumers. Hunted birds with only embedded Pb shot (no steel) declined from 26.9% in 2007–08 to < 2% over the following three hunting seasons after ban reinforcement. Pb shot ingestion in mallards decreased from a pre-ban value of 30.2% to 15.5% in the post-ban period. Liver Pb levels were predominantly defined by the presence of ingested shot, whereas muscle levels were defined by the presence of both ingested and embedded shot. Only 2.5% of mallard muscle tissue had Pb levels above European Union regulations for meat (0.1 μg/g wet weight) in the 2008–09 season, when Pb shot ingestion prevalence was also at a minimum (5.1%). Effective restrictions in Pb ammunition use have a dual benefit since this reduces Pb exposure for game meat consumers due to embedded ammunition as well as reducing Pb poisoning in waterbirds.
Abstract
A major challenge in understanding the origin of terrestrial vertebrates has been knowledge of the pelvis and hind appendage of their closest fish relatives. The pelvic girdle and appendage of tetrapods is dramatically larger and more robust than that of fish and contains a number of structures that provide greater musculoskeletal support for posture and locomotion. The discovery of pelvic material of the finned elpistostegalian, Tiktaalik roseae, bridges some of these differences. Multiple isolated pelves have been recovered, each of which has been prepared in three dimensions. Likewise, a complete pelvis and partial pelvic fin have been recovered in association with the type specimen. The pelves of Tiktaalik are paired and have broad iliac processes, flat and elongate pubes, and acetabulae that form a deep socket rimmed by a robust lip of bone. The pelvis is greatly enlarged relative to other finned tetrapodomorphs. Despite the enlargement and robusticity of the pelvis of Tiktaalik, it retains primitive features such as the lack of both an attachment for the sacral rib and an ischium. The pelvic fin of Tiktaalik (NUFV 108) is represented by fin rays and three endochondral elements: other elements are not preserved. The mosaic of primitive and derived features in Tiktaalik reveals that the enhancement of the pelvic appendage of tetrapods and, indeed, a trend toward hind limb-based propulsion have antecedents in the fins of their closest relatives.
This can happen only at new moon, when the Sun and the Moon are in conjunction as seen from Earth in an alignment referred to as syzygy (a straight line configuration of three celestial bodies). In a total eclipse, the disk of the Sun is fully obscured by the Moon. In partial and annular eclipses only part of the Sun is obscured. A hybrid eclipse (also called annular/total eclipse) shifts between a total and annular eclipse: at certain points on the surface of Earth it appears as a total eclipse, whereas at other points it appears as annular. Hybrid eclipses are comparatively rare.
Martin Karplus, Michael Levitt and Arieh Warshel have been awarded the Nobel Prize 2013 in Chemistry for their work on the development of multiscale methods, keys to lay the foundations of modern computational chemistry.
The Spanish professor Feliu Maseras, from the Instituto Catalán de Investigación Química (ICIQ), has been cited in the documents of the Nobel Foundation: 'Important contributions have been given not only by this year's laureates but also by many others including J. Gao, F. Maseras and K. Morokuma, C.U. Sing and P. Kollman and H. H. Senn and W. Thiel'.
The relevance of the research awarded with this year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry, can be better understended using the own Maseras's words
"The three laureates' contribution was pivotal to the initial development of multiscale methods, which are methods that allow the study of very large molecules by computational chemistry.
Multiscale methods add another dimension to computational chemistry, as they use different methods for different regions of the same chemical system. The most typical case is the use of quantum methods, which are accurate but expensive, to describe a small region of the system, and a method of molecular mechanics, with less computational cost, for the entire system.
In many chemical systems there are very specific regions that require a more accurate description. For instance, an enzyme consists of a well-defined and relatively small in size active site, and a much larger protein region surrounding the active center and very different from this one. In this case, multiscale methods allows the study of the global system: Quantum methods are applied in the study of the active site whereas molecular mechanics methods are used for the rest of the system.
Warshel and Levitt published the first article describing multiscale methods back in the 70s. At that time, those results did not have much impact because the investigation was very advanced for its time and it could not be applied, since it required the use of more powerful computers than did not exist back then. Karplus' results appeared a decade afterwards. He adapted the method developed by Warshel and Levitt to make it suitable for a wider application in the field of biochemical systems calculation. His work laid the foundations for the expansion of such methods, which took place in the last decade of the last century.
The development of these methods enables the theoretical study of enzymatic reactions, such as the coupling process of a drug to its target protein. They can also be successfully applied in other areas of chemistry, such as complex processes in homogeneous catalysis."
Feliu Maseras has worked with another of the great figures in the world of multiscale methods, Professor Morokuma. One of their joint research papers, the one that is mentioned in the description that has facilitated the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, deals with an adaptation of multiscale methods to facilitate its application in other chemistry fields, other than biochemistry, like for instance homogeneous catalysis.
This is the second time that Professor Maseras is referenced in the Nobels. Professor Akira Suzuki, Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2010, also refers to an article by Professor Maseras during his Nobel Lecture at the University of Stockholm in December 8th, 2010.
Abstract
A new computational scheme integrating ab initio and molecular mechanics descriptions in different parts of the same molecule is presented. In contrast with previous approaches, this method is especially designed to allow the introduction of molecular mechanics corrections in full geometry optimizations concerning problems usually studied through ab initio calculations on model systems. The scheme proposed in this article intends to solve some of the systematic error associated with modeling through the use of molecular mechanics corrections. This method, which does not require any new parameter, evaluates explicitly the energy derivatives with respect to geometrical parameters and therefore has a straightforward application to geometry optimization. Examples of its performance on two simple cases are provided: the equilibrium geometry of cyclopropene and the energy barriers on SN2 reactions of alkyl chloride systems. Results are in satisfactory agreement with those of full ab initio calculations in both casesRafael Pardohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00482026140017463557noreply@blogger.com0Valladolid, España41.652251 -4.724532100000033141.46259 -5.0472556000000335 41.841912 -4.4018086000000327tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8290348725032289766.post-38508521781476645912013-10-15T21:12:00.004+02:002013-10-15T21:12:57.536+02:00El Día de Ada Lovelace/Ada Lovelace's Day
