Spanish society demands more public expedniture in science in these days of crisis.
Science and technology occupy the fourth place (28.4%) between the three priorities to increase the public expenditure, a level similar to environment (31.0%), justice (27.6%) or culture (26.4%), according to the V Biyearly Survey of Social Perception of Science and the Technology presented/displayed today by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Tecnología (FECYT) .
More and more people in Spain associate the scientific progress to economic development (+10%) and to the employment (+20%) and the social image of science is positive. Almost 6 of each 10 people consider that their benefits are greater that the damages. Also the percentage of people who think that science contributes to reduce the differences between rich and poor countries, has increased until 25%.
This increase is the cause of science and technology occupy now the fourth place between the priorities of Spanish citizen to increase the public expenditure vs. the sixth place occupied in the 2006 survey, and surpass other areas like justice and culture. In addition, 77% of the population is favorable to increase or to maintain the budget in R+D in a context of public expnditure cuts.
Also, the surveyed people declare they do not receive sufficient information about science and technology, environment and health. Although the health is the priority of R+D preferred by the citizenship, the survey emphasizes a increasing interest in energy.
