Día del mol 2014/ 2014 Mole Day

Tiktaalik roseae was discovered on Canada by an american research team lead by Edward B. Daeschler. This dicovery was reported in 2006 by means of a scientific paper published in Nature. This fossil is very important because it fills in a gap in the transition from fish to amphibians and provides clues as to how the transition took place.
Nature published yesterday, October 16, 2008, the results of new researchs of the discovering team (A Devonian tetrapod-like fish and the evolution of the tetrapod body plan) showing that "Among the morphological changes that occurred during the 'fish-to-tetrapod' transition was a marked reorganization of the cranial endoskeleton."
This species is again on the news: the analysis of the pelvic girdle and fin of the 375 million years species, shows new details about the evolutionary link between fish and terrestrial vertebrates. The study has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of USA, and its results reveal that the rear limbs evolution started with the increase of the rear fins.

Resumen de la publicación/Abstract of the paper
Pelvic girdle and fin of Tiktaalik roseae

Abstract
A major challenge in understanding the origin of terrestrial vertebrates has been knowledge of the pelvis and hind appendage of their closest fish relatives. The pelvic girdle and appendage of tetrapods is dramatically larger and more robust than that of fish and contains a number of structures that provide greater musculoskeletal support for posture and locomotion. The discovery of pelvic material of the finned elpistostegalian, Tiktaalik roseae, bridges some of these differences. Multiple isolated pelves have been recovered, each of which has been prepared in three dimensions. Likewise, a complete pelvis and partial pelvic fin have been recovered in association with the type specimen. The pelves of Tiktaalik are paired and have broad iliac processes, flat and elongate pubes, and acetabulae that form a deep socket rimmed by a robust lip of bone. The pelvis is greatly enlarged relative to other finned tetrapodomorphs. Despite the enlargement and robusticity of the pelvis of Tiktaalik, it retains primitive features such as the lack of both an attachment for the sacral rib and an ischium. The pelvic fin of Tiktaalik (NUFV 108) is represented by fin rays and three endochondral elements: other elements are not preserved. The mosaic of primitive and derived features in Tiktaalik reveals that the enhancement of the pelvic appendage of tetrapods and, indeed, a trend toward hind limb-based propulsion have antecedents in the fins of their closest relatives.

Un eclipse 'bajo Windows'/An eclipse 'under Windows'

The past November 3, 2013, we have had a hybrid Solar eclipse partially visible from Spain. As everyone knows a solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, and the Moon fully or partially blocks ("occults") the Sun. This can happen only at new moon, when the Sun and the Moon are in conjunction as seen from Earth in an alignment referred to as syzygy (a straight line configuration of three celestial bodies). In a total eclipse, the disk of the Sun is fully obscured by the Moon. In partial and annular eclipses only part of the Sun is obscured. A hybrid eclipse (also called annular/total eclipse) shifts between a total and annular eclipse: at certain points on the surface of Earth it appears as a total eclipse, whereas at other points it appears as annular. Hybrid eclipses are comparatively rare.
From the animation above, you can see that this eclipse was only marginal in Spain. However, I have taken some photographies of this celestial event and one of them allows to watch the eclipse (See the above series)
The 'big' picture was taken with a normal digital camera using as filters two old (Windows 95) 3.5" floppy diskettes and an oportune cloud, that have originated these artificial colours. The other images have been made with the help of Photoshop. The edge of the Moon can be seen down right on the surface of the Sun. The picture looks like the above diagram, but the area bitten by the Moon is smaller because Valladolid is at a higher latitude than Madrid.
So, no expensive cameras, no lenses, no telescope... but I have watched a Solar Eclipse 'under Windows'!

¡Disfrutad ambas versiones!

In April 2011 I posted about the 50th anniversary of the first human spaceflight by the Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. That post also included a video about the David Bowie's song 'Space oddity' (you can see here that post). Today I am posting a cover of that song, and the singer is now a true astronaut, the Canadian Chris Hadfield now onboard the International Space Station.
Enjoy both versions!

La tristeza de ser un electrón/The sadness of being an electron

The Middle Earth
On November 13 the International Astronomical Union (IAU) approved the name Mount Doom for a peak on Saturn’s moon Titan. According to the Tolkien's Lord of the Rings series, this mountain lies at the heart of Mordor and is the only site where the One Ring can be unmade. Titan is like a geek heaven, with place names coming from both J. R. R. Tolkien’s mythos and Frank Herbert’s Dune series.
All mountains on Titan are named for fictional peaks in Tolkien’s books. In addition to Mount Doom, there is Mount Erebor, the Lonely Mountain, where Bilbo and company travel to fight the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit and also the Misty Mountains which house the Dwarven city of Khazad-dum and the mines of Moria, where the dwarves dug too deep, unleashing the Balrog that kills Gandalf (well, almost killed him).
The plains of Titan are named from planets in Frank Herbert’s Dune series such as Arrakis Planitia, named for the planet where Paul Atreides becomes Muad’Dib and learns to ride the mighty sandworms. The Chusuk plain and Sikun labyrinth are also named for planets in the Dune series.
There are many other features in the Solar system that do not follow the habitual mithology nomenclature. You can see the current list of categories in the IAU's web site.
Note. As many of you will know, the post title is the Khuzdul battle cry of the Dwarves and its translation is "Axes of the Dwarves! The Dwarves are upon you!"

Every October 23, between 6.02 a.m. and 6.02 p.m. is the Mole Day that commemorates Avogadro Constant (6.02 x 10^23), which is a basic measuring unit in chemistry and expresses the number of elementary entities per mole of substance.
The Avogadro constant is named after the early nineteenth-century Italian scientist Lorenzo Romano Amedeo Carlo Avogadro, who first proposed that the volume of a gas (at a given pressure and temperature) is proportional to the number of atoms or molecules regardless of the nature of the gas.
Avogadro proposed his hypothesis in a paper published the 14th of July of 1811 in the Journal de Physique, de Chimie et d'Histoire naturelle whit the title; Essai d'une manière de déterminer les masses relatives des molecules élémentaires des corps, et les proportions selon lesquelles elles entrent dans ces combinaisons. The value of the constat was first calculated in 1865 by Johann Josef Loschmidt, whereas the French physicist Jean Perrin (Nobel Prize in Physics 1926) proposed in 1909 to name the constant in honor of Avogadro.
"I pledge allegiance to the mole, to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, and to the atomic mass for which it stands, one number, most divisible, with atoms and molecules for all"

Pan (also named Saturn XVIII) is the innermost moon of the most of 50 satellites of Saturn. It is a walnut-shaped small moon about 35 km across and 23 km high that orbits within the Encke Gap in Saturn's A Ring. It was discovered by Mark R. Showalter in 1990 from analysis of old Voyager 2 probe photos dated from 1981.

Pan acts like a ring shepherd moon and (Its name come from the Greek god Pan, son of Hermes and a nymph, god of shepherds and flocks, nature, of mountain wilds, hunting and rustic music) and is responsible for keeping the Encke Gap free of ring particles which accumulate on its equatorial ridge, giving Pan its peculiar walnut-shaped aspect recreated by the scientists from the Cassini Mission data in the opening picture.

Seeing the Cassini Mission’s image, immediately come to mind images of floating islands or UFOs as those accompanying this post, that were imagined and drawn long before the image of Pan was known.
Is nature imitating art or just anything we can imagine can exist?

"I pledge allegiance to the mole, to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, and to the atomic mass for which it stands, one number, most divisible, with atoms and molecules for all"

The Yes Men y el desastre de Bhopal/The Yes Men and the Bhopal disaster

The Yes men'The Yes Men' es un grupo formado por Andy Bichlbaum y Mike Bonanno.

'The Yes Men' is formed by Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno. With the help of their collaborators, they create web sites of fictitious industries, among others methods, with the aim to be invited to congresses and high level meetings of industrial companies, especially those industries whose attitude of scorn to the human life or the nature, has become patent.
Ignoring the comprehensible violent reaction, the wrath, the annoyance and all the reactions that would cause to have knowledge of how these groups put first their financial profits without no other consideration, 'The YES' men introduce themselves in the higher level circles of power, to say they, in their own fac,e the madness and non-sense of their behaviour. Ant the do it with the tool of the ridiculous and the humour.
In one of their last great actions, Andy Bichlbaum disguissed as a spokeman of Dow Chemical, the petrochemical company causing the greater industrial catastrophe of history, in its factory of Bohpal, India. In spite of the Down responsability, the hundresds of have not received any aid for the company. For that reason Andy Bichlbaum, like spokesman of Dow Chemical, announced through the BBC, that Dow Chemical assumed all the responsibility by the dsisaster of twenty years ago, although that would suppose financial losses for the company…
The immediate result was that Dow Chemical shares lowered, losing two million dollars. Later, when they were forced to publicly recognize his “joke”, they were accused to laugh at thee other people's misfortune and of making fun of the town of Bohpal, whose habitants, after to know this sad joke, were desolated and moaning... Thus, The Yes Men did not doubt in moving to Bohpal to verify this supposed reaction by themselves, and they discovered a town that has fight the misfortune, and that, far from to feel sad, was thankful to they because at least for a short time, their disaster was again in the breaking news.
